Democracy and Good Governance
Democracy and Good Governance

Democracy is one of the best fascinating system of governance, using right of vote people elect their representatives to run the affairs of state and peoples welfare and development programs. However contrary to this the decision makers in public offices misuse their power and neglect peoples mandate and cause social problems, financial difficulties as well as social services delivery. Moreover, due to extreme poverty and lower level of education and consciousness, masses have to re-elect the same inapt political leader of same family and clan who control and run their resources and institutions. Lack of awareness and information regarding the importance of choosing right political leader have already created a vacuum and people need to be aware and educate in towards electing good and effective political representative. As a result of such political leadership vacuum Pakistans democracy system witness political violence motivated by ethnic, religious, tribal, ideological, or other identities; violence based on organizational or professional affiliation; and violence based on political party affiliation What Roshni is doing •promoting the essence of democracy among communities, Roshni accompanied with its activists and volunteers have focused to sentized and organized communities for their active participation in electoral process. •Making accountable public institutions towards communities welfare and other day to day social welfare programs Roshni actively involves with civil society actors and communities through the interventions of organizing public seminars, workshops and capacity building programs. Climate Change & Disaster Risk Reduction

Globalization and its corporate world have induced climate extremes, with having profound consequences on people’s socio – economic sectors such as health, food production, energy consumption and natural resource management. Largely effecting on rural communities climate change remarkably causes the issues of people’s landlessness, and vulnerability towards poverty rise as well as human rights issues. Pakistan contributes very little to the overall Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, but severely suffers by the effects of climate change by ways of increase in flooding and decrease downstream river flow in sea and cause sea intrusion and people’s massive displacement. Moreover, declining fresh water resources and devastating agriculture as well depleting biodiversity. Combining the decrease in yields and agriculture labor force unemployment this converts the urbanization which ultimately raises the risks of food security and governance issues in cities. Additionally the endemic morbidity and mortality due to disease associated with floods and droughts are expected to rise. However, this would also aggravate the existing social inequalities of resources use and intensify social factors leading to instability, conflicts, displacement and other human rights issues. What Roshni is doing •Setting on the left bank of river Indus, district Ghotki is one of the vulnerable and affected area of recent floods. Responding to such climate extremes, Roshni accompanied with communities, donors and different stakeholders had have a vast experience of disaster preparedness and mitigation strategies and interventions. •Reducing the risks of climate extremes Roshni had also developed the mechanisms of information about the impact of climate change through improved technological systems, early warning systems. Reducing the vulnerability to livelihoods to climate change through infra-structural changes as well promoting good governance and responsible policy by integrating risk management and adaptation. Additionally, developing sustainable and resilient farm production practices, including new crop varieties and irrigation techniques. Empowering communities and local stakeholders so that they participate actively in vulnerability assessment and implementation of adaptation.

Near about 76% of the rural families in Sindh are landless, among which40 million population lives below the line of poverty, being tenant or share cropper peasants even do not enjoy the right of growing crops according to their aspirations as well cultural norms, they would also have to face many other kinds of exploitations of paying lower wages, beegar work (working on lands without incentive), and indebting in the costs of inputs and machinery charges. Locating on the right banks of river Indus, small and landless peasant communities of Ghotki District also face the issues of livelihoods and food insecurity. On the other side, due to increased water logging and salinity problems, a vast majority of small and landless peasant community is unable to grow different types of other seasonal crops; it has not only declined the fertility of lands but also made farmers helpless to quest for the search of other (market based) alternative farming resources.
